Another large and beautiful member of the parrot family. Rather similar to the Scarlet Macaw Ara macao, but is darker red and can be separated from that species by the lack of yellow patches on its wings. It also displays prominent facial striping, actually lines of tiny red feathers. Can be seen in large numbers at Blanquillo on the upper Rio Madre de Dios, where they gather to socialize and eat minerals at the clay-lick. They usually exclude all other macaws from these gatherings, but will sometimes allow one or two Scarlets to join in. As with other macaws, it has a loud and raucous call.
